I will no longer be posting here but instead will be on <a href="http://where-is-wallis.blogspot.co.uk/">http://where-is-wallis.blogspot.co.uk/</a>.<br />
<br />
There are a few reasons for this move but the main one is just ease. Because this google account is unconnected to all my other google sites I had to keep signing in and out and I just forgot to maintain this blog but now I have just decided to make a new one that I will keep on top of because it's not a hassle to sign in to. It also has the same name as my YouTube which is just easier for people to find me on multiple sites. <br />
<br />
This new blog may not be entirely books, there may be some other things going on there as well but they won't be boring things I promise. <br />
<br />
I'd really love it if you could check it out!Iona Englishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10003472327821595374noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8485326767460296989.post-64154406448959888782013-02-10T00:16:00.000+00:002013-02-10T00:30:45.707+00:00Tea Pigs Haul<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="https://s3.amazonaws.com/netgalley-covers/cover18839-medium.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/netgalley-covers/cover18839-medium.png" width="207" /></a></div>
Noah Hutchins is bad news. A dark loner with a nasty reputation, a
leather jacket and a bad attitude. Exactly the kind of boy Echo knows to
stay away from, but could his brutal honesty and lack of respect for
authority be exactly what she needs when no one else seems to want to
tell her the truth or even help her find out why she doesn't remember
the night she some how ended up with scars decorating her arms and a
restraining order against her mother?<br />
<br />
This book is told from both Noah and Echo's point of
view. This
alternating between the two main characters really helps you to
understand them and their problems better. You really connect to them
because you see what they think and feel about things. The other
characters too felt like they had personalities and weren't just there
to help or hinder Noah and Echo, they were all flawed but in ways that
felt real. Never did this book become too typically teenage to the point
where you want to roll your eyes, throw it at the floor and walk off
because it's given you a headache and made you sick to death of anyone
under 20 (which I myself am not so that's irony for you). It felt just
right. Yes these characters are hormonal, slightly naive teenagers but
they're also smart, determined and they don't always sit around and sulk
when there is a problem, they do something about it.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
I won't say that this book was particularly surprising, with a little
bit of brain power it's not hard to work out what happened to Echo and
how this whole story will end but really it's the journey that matters.
The chemistry between Noah and Echo was electric and their relationship
and devotion to helping each other as friends and more was so
heart-wrenchingly sweet that it made me miss being at the start of a
relationship, or just in a relationship all together. There were points
when Noah and Echo were kissing that I just wanted to put my book down
and go find me a hot guy to make out with but I didn't, I was too
enthralled with their storyline.<br />
<br />
Over all I
think this is a really great story. It's not really going to help
anyone who is going through problems like Echo's because it at some
points felt like the book was implying that you can't work out problems
on your own, you need someone else's help to do it. Preferably someone
you are greatly attracted to. But because the relationship felt so real
I'll let that slide. I definitely think this was one of the best
contemporary romances of 2012.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<i>Glow is the story of Waverly. Waverly is the oldest girl in
her generation, the first generation of children to be born on board the
Empyrean, after a bout of infertility. Their ship and another just like it, the
New Horizon, have left Earth for a new planet the believe they can colonize
after Earth’s resources start running out and it becomes an unbearable place to
live. However something goes wrong.</i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span> </i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i>In the heart of a
nebula New Horizon, which should be so far ahead of the Empyrean that they can’t
see it, has slowed down enough so that they are almost side along with Waverly’s
ship. Crew members from the New Horizon board the Empyrean and quickly
everything goes down hill. The girls are taken from their homes, most of the
adults are killed, the Empyrean is sabotaged and the boys are left to cope by
themselves without a clue. Amidst chaos and fear Waverly must learn that power
corrupts, everyone has secrets and but most importantly; how to find a way back home </i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Today I thought I’d write a review for Glow. Both from the
cover and the genre of this book I thought it would be painfully like Across
the Universe, which I did not like, and so I was incredibly apprehensive about
reading this at first. In fact I didn’t even bother to check out the
description, so turned off by the idea it might compare to a book that had disappointed me as much as Across the Universe had done.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<a name='more'></a>However, after seeing a ‘glowing’ (haha like my pun) video
review by Raleen on Youtube I decided to give it ago, gritting my teeth and not
expecting much at all. First of all I’d like to say that I did not hate this
book, but I do have a lot of reservations about it. <br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The characters are good for the must part, Waverly definitely feels like a
tough chick. Unlike so many lead protagonists she does not "umm" and "ahh" about
things. She acts. She finds things out, changes what she doesn’t like, stands
up against what she doesn’t believe in and battles through out. Some of the other
characters like Kieran and Seth also feel well rounded and actually like
people, but there is not much more than 5 or 10 characters that feel like that.
A lot of the side characters feel flat and uninteresting. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The world building was decent. I felt like this book had
enough scientific knowledge in it, although not great amounts. I was a little
annoyed during the vacuum scene where it was obvious that the author didn’t
know what would actually happen if someone died in a vacuum. However the
differences between the two ships in terms of crew felt very real and I did
like the way religion was shown in this book. It can give hope and create
peace, but it can also be a dangerous weapon of power over people. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
My biggest issue with this book was the pacing. Every few
chapters we’d get a sentence randomly in an event which said “a few months
passed like this” or “after a few months” etc... but it didn’t feel like a few
months had passed, nor did it feel like some of the issues should have taken so
long to resolve. If you are desperate and angry some things should take weeks
at best to overcome. As well as the events in this apparently taking so long no
one aged, not one person had a birthday. I know it’s unlikely they’d celebrate
a birthday but it could have been mentioned if this book supposedly spans
months and months. And the timelines where events where happening on the
Empyrean and events were happening on New Horizon didn’t seem to match very
well, they could have been happening more clearly at the same or different
times. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Over all this book was decent. A good quick read, but it was
by no means beautifully written or well thought out really. Science was used
when it helped the plot and that was about it, the issues it tackled were good
but they could have been handled better. Overall it was decent but not book of
the year for me even though I enjoyed Waverly’s character and the storyline I
don’t think it was executed as well as it could have been. </div>

<span id="freeText16143097714681998018"><i>In
the dark, filthy salt mines of Endovier, an eighteen-year-old girl is
serving a life sentence. She is a trained assassin, the best of her
kind, but she made a fatal mistake: she got caught.<br /><br />Young Captain
Westfall offers her a deal: her freedom in return for one huge
sacrifice. Celaena must represent the prince in a to-the-death
tournament—fighting the most gifted thieves and assassins in the land.
Live or die, Celaena will be free. Win or lose, she is about to discover
her true destiny. But will her assassin’s heart be melted?</i> - From Goodreads</span><br />
<br />
When people
talk about this book, and Celaena they mention that she is beautiful, arrogant
and girly. Not usually traits I particularly like my female protagonists to
have, yet Celaena pulled it off incredibly well. I was terrified that this girl
would end up like whatshername from Paranormalcy, girly and arrogant to the
point of stupidity, but no. Celaena has her reasons to be arrogant. She's good
at what she does and she is deadly beautiful. </div>

You really
feel for this character. Orphaned at a young age, trained in sometimes dreadful
ways and then betrayed and left to rot as a slave for a year in a place most
people only last a month. She has been beaten and broken and yet she remains a
fighter. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
I expected
this to be a decent book about palace politics and a female assassin fighting
for freedom, but it was so much more. It was a book about friendships, love,
magic and not letting the world break you. I never expected so much depth, or
magic.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
The
relationships between people are perfectly built. If Celaena doesn’t like
someone your skin crawls as well. If she befriends them you feel yourself
growing attached. The relationships never feel forced, or at least they don’t
till right at the end. And while there is a love triangle it doesn’t take
president over the story itself it just develops naturally throughout.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
The magic
element is never really mentioned in reviews so when it became a big part of the
plot I was incredibly happy and surprised. What’s a good fantasy without magic?
The magic here makes you feel like something bigger is going on, that Celaena
has a destiny that is only hinted at throughout the book bot not revealed. This
aspect will certainly make me want to read the next book. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Overall
though this review isn’t particularly good, it’s been a long time since I’ve
actually done a written one, I’d say the book it’s self is good. It’s not
written in a way that makes you want to tattoo the whole thing over your body
but the world building is superb, the characters are well fleshed out and the
plot all but simple. I think this book definitely deserves the reviews it has
gotten. </div>

Are you serious?<br />
<br />
Ok so I would be ecstatic if I thought they were making 3 The Hobbit films for the sake of being true to the book. Any book to movie adaptation is always going to have things missing. It's just a guarantee. Even a two parter. But that's not the reason for the trilogy. Oh no. Jackson has decided to take world of middle earth and try and make it his own. He's adding things in that are not in the books, and even though some of it is from Tolkien himself a lot of it will be up to Jackson's interpretation and don't get me wrong, he did an amazing job on The Lord of the Rings, but the ONLY FUCKING REASON they are creating a trilogy out of 1 book is so that they can pump it for all the money it's worth. Now instead of having to spend £5-£7 for a cinema ticket to see two films I will have to spend it to see three. That's £15- £24 one films alone, then with all 3 DVD/Blu-rays and then later probably extended editions or limited edition box sets that's a whole fucking lot of money they're trying to get out of something that isn't Jackson's idea. AND, the original creator, Tolkien won't see a penny of that. His family might, but he won't, he's dead and he can't complain. I bet they'll just make more fucking movies out of his other books as well. Can you tell I'm mad?<br />
<br />
Sigh. I really wish Del Toro had been able to direct this movie.Iona Englishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10003472327821595374noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8485326767460296989.post-40191224557151062942012-07-31T17:16:00.002+01:002012-07-31T17:16:57.347+01:00Book Haul-Stormdancer, The Hobbit. Stormdancer comes out in the UK on September 13th and is being published by Tor. The Hardback is 438 pages of epic.<br />
<br />
This story is about a girl named Yukiko, her special gift and her broken family. Ordered by their Shogun (their emperor/king basically) the hunters of the imperial court, led by Yukiko’s own father, set off on the impossible task to find a thunder tiger, knowing that the beast is extinct and the mad Shogun’s order is basically a death sentence. If they refuse, they die. If they fail, they die. The only thing they can do is set off on a sky ship, the Thunder Child, and pray that their God grants them fortune but fortune always comes about in a way no one expects. Set in a Japan inspired land with lots of steampunk elements this really is an epic fantasy.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>When I received this book I was instantly surprised. I had applied to get an advance copy for review but expected not to be able to get my hands on this book until it was released in paperback. So of course when I did get a review copy I was instantly terrified that either I would hate the book or my review would be terrible. And neither is something you want to do with a highly anticipated novel. That being said, my review may still be terrible but I definitely did not hate this book although I'm still pretty certain they only accidentally sent me a copy to review. <br />
<br />
<br />
The book starts off by throwing you into the action, Yukiko is fighting for her life against the Oni, but you have no clue how she got there or why a winged beast is attempting to save her and before you find anything out you are taken back to a few weeks before the fight starts.<br />
<br />
For the first quarter of the book you are introduced to the muti-dimensional and flawed characters on-board the Thunder Child, as well as the world that Yukiko lives in. Jay Kristoff has this amazing way of describing things. One of the most memorable scenes to me is when Yukiko is walking through the market to the docks. The description is exquisite. No detail is missed by Kristoff, he uses all of the senses to make you feel like you are actually walking along with Yukiko experiencing the terrible and grand things that she does.<br />
<br />
Occasionally the description gets a little repetitive but I think that aspect is needed as you are so fully submerged in this other culture and without the slight repetition you would not know what was going on because there are so many different elements to remember.<br />
<br />
This story is more than I was ever expecting, I was expecting a reluctant hunter’s daughter to find a thunder tiger and become a Stormdancer, pulling her family from poverty to riches, or something along those lines. But this is so much more. There is love, betrayal, an insane leader and a corrupt, fanatical guild vying for power but neither able to truly control on their own. There is civil unrest, substance abuse, friendships, loss, sex, murder as well as twists and turns all the way through that weave a tail of morality above all.<br />
<br />
This book does not pussy foot around important issues as many YA’s do. It acknowledges and addresses them head on in a way that say’s “these things exist and we can’t ignore them or pretend that good people don’t have flaws.” Which is what I love most about all these characters, they are all flawed. No one is perfect but they try to be as good as they can in the terrible situations they are in.<br />
<br />
I don’t know if you can tell but I’m trying to write this review without spoiling it because there is so much that you just need to read for yourself to fully appreciate it so my review isn’t talking about any of the specific elements I loved. I am reviewing the book as a whole and being very general because I honestly think you need to go out and read this book, if for nothing else read it for Yukiko who is one of the best female protagonists I have read in a long time. She is strong but at times naively unaware. The relationships she forms with people and creatures feel very organic and even though this book is not from her point of view Jay Kristoff captured her personality and voice so perfectly I can still hear her in my head.<br />
<br />
One problem I had with the book is that I’m terrible with names, and a lot of main characters are given multiple names in this book which sometimes mean I wasn’t sure who I was reading about but I usually figured it out after a paragraph.<br />
<br />
OK, so wow. For a really general review this is really frigging long but I just loved it. In just one book Kristoff, the literal literary giant, has created a brilliantly thought out world with a cast of three-dimensional characters. The way it ended was perfect; I loved how he didn’t take 3 or 4 books to tackle a problem. It was dealt with and I can’t wait to see how the world continues to develop and tackle its issues in the next two books. I hope they live up to the high bar Jay has set himself. THIS IS A MUST READ!<br />
<br />
I'd like to thank Jay and Tor for sending me this book to review. <br />

<span id="freeText9672388011318649429">Written for J.R.R. Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit is the classic children's story about Bilbo Baggins, the reluctant burglar for a group of dwarves intent on taking their treasure and home back from the terrible dragon Smaug. This is a re-read. I first read this book when I was about 8.</span><br />
<span id="freeText9672388011318649429"><br /></span><br />
<span id="freeText9672388011318649429">The Hobbit has been held as a classic for a long time and it deserves that status. The story follows this unlikely group of creatures as the set off towards the misty mountains. Tolkien's writing style is incredible, it flows beautifully and describes this wonderful cast of characters and their predicaments perfectly. I love how songs and riddles are incorporated through out the story, which is something modern fantasy doesn't tend to do much of. </span><br />
<span id="freeText9672388011318649429"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<span id="freeText9672388011318649429"> </span><span id="freeText9672388011318649429">Bilbo is such an endearing character. He is basically a grumpy, middle-aged man who has been thrown into some of the worst and most marvelous experiences. And as he's never had any experiences outside the shire you really get to experience these things as he does; as a stranger who has been invited into something marvelous. </span><span id="freeText9672388011318649429">There are some beautiful moments, like with the elves, and some pretty creepy moments like with Golumn. </span><br />
<br />
<span id="freeText9672388011318649429">Also being massive fan of the The Lord of the Rings films, and hopefully eventually the book, I found it really interesting to re-read things about characters that are mentioned or who have big parts in LotR but that I had forgotten about in The Hobbit. Gandalf is also quite different when he is younger. </span><br />
<span id="freeText9672388011318649429"><br /></span><br />
<span id="freeText9672388011318649429">I would say though that although this book was wrote for children I think the language is quite hard for children of the modern age who might struggle in some places.I would say for children it is best read to/ or along with but it is also great appreciated by yourself as an adult/ late teen. </span><br />
<span id="freeText9672388011318649429"><i><br /></i></span><br />
<span id="freeText9672388011318649429">I only have two problems with The Hobbit, one is the demise of Smaug, which just seems a little too convenient. The other is that in this entire cast of characters there is not a single lead woman, in fact you'd be pushed to find a woman in it at all. I know it was a different time back then, but it almost feels a little misogynistic. In some aspects then it doesn't quite work so well tackled by a modern reader, which is why they had to play up the 3 main female characters and make them stronger in LotR films, but it is still a beautifully written fantasy.</span><br />
<span id="freeText9672388011318649429"><br /></span><br />
<span id="freeText9672388011318649429">To buy or not to buy? I think The Hobbit is the sort of book everyone should have in their collection and pass it down through the generations. So buy it, read it and love it for the quirky classic fantasy that it is. <i><br /></i></span>Iona Englishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10003472327821595374noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8485326767460296989.post-75199094303821163732012-07-17T11:29:00.000+01:002012-07-17T11:29:50.813+01:00Reading RutI'm in a bit of a reading rut right now. I think my problem is that I bought so many books to read over the summer that I don't know where to start and I know I need to get some read ASAP so that I can review them, but because I have so many it's all incredibly daunting.<br />
<br />
Do you guys ever get into reading ruts and if you do how do you get out of them? I'd really like some advice. <br />

They were on the third day of their journey, and Bianca could’ve sworn she heard something in the distance. Terrance stopped to listen, too. It sounded as though an earthquake had grown legs and was running toward them. David gnawed on a smoked piece of venison; he dropped it and stood absolutely still. He too was bothered by the sound he heard.
Prince Ferdinand glanced at Terrance. “Did you hear that?”
“I’m starting to think that all bad things start with that question,” Ming said.
Bianca’s stomach dropped. She was certain that the ground would split open and swallow them whole. David growled. At least Bianca knew she wasn’t losing her mind. The horses reared back and threw their passengers off their backs. They all fell clumsily to the ground and watched as the horses kicked up the dust and dirt off the earth as they vanished into the thick forest.
“Crap,” Bianca muttered.
“I’m getting kinda tired of being terrified,” Ming said.
Terrance tensed. “We need to run and hide…now.” The urgency and fear in his voice didn’t escape Bianca.
“Who’s after us?” Bianca asked.
“He’s not so much of a who…he’s more of a what.”
“<i>What</i> is he?” Ming asked.
“Wolf,” he said.
“A wolf?” Bianca asked.
Terrance nodded.
“As in the <i>Big Bad Wolf</i>?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“Crap,” Bianca and Ming said in unison.
Bianca’s mind went a million miles per second as she tried to think of a plan. That was when she remembered the brick in her backpack.
“Hang on.” Bianca opened her backpack and found the red brick sitting at the bottom.
“What are you doing? Why aren’t we running?” Ming shrieked.
“Saving our butts, that’s what I’m doing,” Bianca said.
“I swear to God, Bianca, the horses have more sense than we do,” Ming muttered.
“Shut up and do as I say,” Bianca ordered.
“Not by the hair on my chiny, chin, chin.” Bianca placed the red brick on the ground and took a step back after chanting the spell.
The brick trembled and quickly multiplied itself over and over again. It looked as though a small army of invisible hands was building a house at rapid speed. This continued until everyone was standing in front of a large brick house. Bianca opened the door and corralled everyone inside the impenetrable walls of the famous home that belonged to the third little pig. She locked the door behind her and let out a sigh of relief.
<i>Hopefully we’ll be safe from whatever is after us.</i>
“Wow,” Ming said as she looked around and took everything in. “B?”
“Yeah?”
“How is a brick house going to stop that giant wolf from squishing us to death?”
“This house is indestructible.”
“Ooooh…cool,” Ming said.
Then the house trembled as though bombs were falling from the sky. Ming screamed and ran to the furthest corner of the house. She covered her head with her hands and muttered several incoherent words. Ferdinand ran to her and held her tight. Ming accepted this bit of comfort and clung to him as though her life depended on it.
Bianca walked to the window. She wasn’t sure what to look for, but it was better than rocking herself back and forth in a fetal position while sucking on her thumb. She saw nothing but pine trees and dried up leaves scattered on the ground. She assumed that the wolf Terrance spoke of was currently on the roof wreaking havoc (or at least trying to) on the little brick house. She screamed when a huge yellow-green eye covered her view.
“Let me in,” the wolf growled, his voice sounding like rocks falling down a mountain.
“No!” Bianca screamed.
“I’ll let you have a swift end. Better for me to end your life than the witch,” he snarled.
“I said no!” she shouted.
“You can’t stay in there forever…even the pigs had to come out at some point,” the wolf said and then chuckled.

Some thoughts on GoodreadsI have to ask myself time and time again, am I being too harsh with my ratings on Goodreads?<br />
<br />
I browse through many other bloggers, book tubers and friends ratings on there and they happily give 5 stars to a book they liked. Most books I really enjoy I only give 4 stars to. My reasoning behind this is because I believe that a 5 star book is something that changes your life. That makes you smarter or creates elicits an extreme emotional response. Books I really enjoy don't necessarily do that.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
I can thoroughly enjoy a book that is decently written with good characters, but I cannot love something like that. There has to be something more about the book, something special that makes you feel like everyone needs to read that book, or that if you could only ever read one story again it would be that one, over and over until you die.<br />
<br />
That is what a 5 star rating is to me, which is why perhaps I don't rate things that way on my blog. I don't like defining things by a number. Numbers mean different tings to me that they do to you. 4 stars might not be worth your time but to me I think they're great. <br />
<br />
So how do you rate your books on Goodreads and do reviews on Goodreads matter more than ratings? Leave me your links to your Goodreads, I am always looking for more people to interact with on there.<br />

But then a strange boy named Peter arrives, a boy who has lived outside Grange Hall all his life, and she starts to question things. Like, should she really be sorry for living?</i><br />
<br />
<u>What I liked?</u><br />
Anna. Anna's progression through the book is very interesting. She changes quite a bit through out but she never looses her tough, stubborn edge. She can be a bit of a bitch sometimes but she has been given the worst out of life and is just trying to get by as best she can, living by the rules and expectancies of Grange Hall. When you read her diary it's really interesting to see initially how much she loathes her existence.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
Grange Hall. Ok no I didn't like The Hall but y'know, I... liked The Hall? I liked how well thought out the hall was. It was well constructed by Malley so you could easily picture it in your minds eye and imagine the suffering that goes on in there for the children's 'own good'<br />
<br />
The characters. Even though this is written as a young teen's book there are a lot of multi-layered characters and you get to experience what they are experiencing through the way the book is written.<br />
<br />
The writing and world building. Like I said before for a teen's book this is a very detailed book. You learn these quirky little things about the building or the people in it and you get told stuff that later you find out is wrong. It makes you really feel like the whole book is just full of character and history and that this may actually happen because I believe people would go crazy and turn on their belief's if they could have a chance not to die. <br />
<ul>
</ul>
<u>What I didn't like?</u><br />
<br />
This book felt like almost a kid's version of Never Let Me Go. It had the same boarding school feel with a sinister edge. And while there is a difference between the two schools, one planning to have you killed for the grater good and one planning to raise you for a life of servitude and only have you killed if you can't do it, they are still quite similar stories. Although, I feel it will become a lot more about the world and less about the school itself in the other books written in this series.<br />
<ul>
</ul>
<u>To buy or not to buy?</u><br />
<br />
If you're looking for a series, buy it! If you're only looking for a one shot book I'd skip this. <br />

Onto the review...<br />
<br />
Dark Matter: A Ghost Story by Michelle Paver<br />
<br />
<i>1937, London. Jack is poor, lonely and desperate for a change so when he is offered a chance to join an arctic expedition he jumps at the offer. But the arctic summer is brief. As night returns back to the land and the dark creeps in Jack begins to realise something else walks the frozen land outside their little cabin...</i><br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<u>What I liked?</u><br />
<br />
The writing style- It was well written and well descriptive without being OVERLY descriptive *cough*Wuthering Heights*cough*. There was enough detail for you to get into the book and start to know the characters. I especially liked it when they were describing the arctic summer. It is in complete contrast to the Artic later on in the book but it sounds so beautiful you almost want to live there during that time. Almost...<br />
<br />
You really connect to Jack, the main protagonist. You care about what he cares about, hat what he hates and all the way through deeply worry for his safety.<br />
<br />
Isaak. If I ever got a dog I'd want it to be like him.<br />
<ul>
</ul>
<u>What I didn't like?</u><br />
<br />
I didn't not like much, but I was reading this on one of the hottest days this year in the midday sun, in the garden with my family. It was hard to get the sense of cold, dark isolation Jack was feeling when I was close to passing out from the heat.<br />
<ul>
</ul>
<u>To buy or not to buy?</u><br />
<br />
Put this book on your Christmas wish list, don't read it in the summer. I imagine in the cold, dreary winter days this book would be incredibly creepy and do exactly what it is supposed to do, scare the living daylights out of you. I just read it in the wrong time of year. <br />

So as you can tell this is a very stressful time and I'm really sorry but I hope you guys will understand. When I have a minute to spare I will try and write up so reviews and queue them up on here but till then I hope you understand.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>A Reader or a writer, which would you rather be?</b></div>
When I first started writing, I went to a weekend writing retreat that was held on the prairies up in the Cypress Hills of Alberta. This workshop was led by a Canadian cowboy writer by the name of Guy Vanderhaeghe. He wrote a book called <i>The Englishman’s Boy</i> (which was later turned into a film). One of the first questions he asked us all was, “Tell me now, how many books have you read this year?” (To which I internally responded, O<i>ne! Don’t judge me!</i>) The thing is, even though I wanted to be a writer, I hadn’t yet even become a reader. Guy told us, his little herd of wanna-be writers, what we desperately needed to hear, that we simply could not become writers without being readers first. (So I bought his book.) Anyway, this was the year I became a reader. I think I read fifty books that year. (Which is pretty good, considering I had only read a handful of short gothic romances up until this point.) After reading Guy’s book, <i>The Englishman’s Boy,</i> I exclaimed: “Holy-moly, this guy is a great writer!” (I mean he is super great…Margaret Atwood kind of great, except he writes cowboy type historical fiction). I was over the moon. How did this rather shy guy write this amazing book? I mean, just listen to his voice and syntax…“The other horses trickled down the slope after them, filling the coulee as water fills the bed of a river. One by one they dropped from sight, tails switching, heads bobbing, ghostly gleaming horses running back into the earth like shining, strengthening water.”
I was convinced. I couldn’t be a writer without being a reader. So I read and read and read. I read all kinds of books—every type of genre. And then the inevitable happened. After all, when you’re a reader eventually you start to think, “I really could write something like this.” And when I hit the genre of <i>memoir</i> I knew this was it…this was the type of book I wanted to write. I wanted to write a memoir using the voice of a kid and the voice of a teenager.
So in regards to who I would rather be—writer or reader, my answer is <i>both</i>. Reading is great…escaping into someone’s life, learning about abstract ideas all while being entertained, seeing yourself in someone’s fictional character, learning how to handle tragedy or how to find courage through someone else’s words. All this comes from reading. But writing is great too…pushing yourself to finish a manuscript, editing until you wanna puke, reworking structure, learning to control voice, dreaming up characters, or crafting a real person <i>into</i> a character. This is writing. And it’s great.
SO YOU WANT TO WRITE A NOVEL?
